Job Description

In this role, you have the opportunity to

develop and improve computational and mathematical data analysis tools and analyze and interpret the results of cancer genomic data.

You will be working on NGS-based methods that are clinically applicable. In addition, you will be analyzing biomolecular data derived from clinical studies and biological experiments (qPCR, microarray, RNA-

seq) to verify, develop and further improve our computational models. Furthermore, you will act as a source of information and explore new opportunities in biomolecular and clinical outcome data analysis approaches and contribute to the department strategy in this field.

You should have the ambition for a technical project lead role.

You are responsible for

  • Carrying out industrial research, enlarging relevant knowledge and bringing in new knowledge in the area of computational biology, with a focus on analyses of data from clinical cohorts
  • Translating knowledge to operational use within the team developing novel molecular tests
  • A methodological way of working, where milestones are defined in a clear project framework, aligned with stakeholder requirements
  • Contributing to the strategic orientation of the research department in the area of bioinformatics

    The Precision and Decentralized Diagnostics (PDDx) department of Philips Research is working on innovative solutions to improve people’s lives by developing precision diagnostics solutions for relevant clinical questions, and empowering health professionals to use them in routine clinical decision making.

    We are specialized in generating and understanding complex feature-rich data in different specialisms such as imaging, pathology and genomics.

    We develop novel biological and mathematical models and algorithms making use of the generated data and we interpret data in a patient-

    specific biological context based on deep clinical and biological insights.

    We innovate mainly in the disease areas of Oncology and Cardiology and work in close collaboration with several Philips business, primarily in the business unit Emerging Business Areas and with internal ventures in HealthWorks.

    To succeed in this role, you should have the following skills and experience

  • Ph.D. in bio-informatics or in an applied quantitative discipline, such as computational biology with a strong interest in either basic or translational research
  • A strong background in bioinformatics analyses of molecular data (DNAseq, RNAseq, single cell genomics, etc.)
  • Proven track record in building analysis pipelines and managing data collections (using the FAIR data principles) and familiar with version control (Git, Docker)
  • Both practical hands-on clinical and biomolecular data analysis experience and a sound mathematical education level
  • Ability to combine biology and mathematics / statistics in developing new approaches and connect multiple disciplines
  • Excellent technical reporting skills
  • A team-player mentality and supervisory experience
  • Customer orientation and comfortable in a commercial research environment
  • It would be of future advantage if you have in addition

  • A strong background in machine learning and predictive modeling with experience in common programming languages and genomic data analysis
  • Proven track record in cancer genomics, mutation analysis and network biology
  • Being fluent in Python, R and / or MATLAB, Linux / distributed environments
  • A strong background in processing, analyzing and interpreting clinical outcome data
  • A background in modeling of biological systems
  • Experience with metagenomics of human microbiomes, detection of fusion genes and single-cell transcriptome analysis.
  • Ability to combine biology and mathematics / statistics in developing new approaches and connect multiple disciplines,
