PhD student Plasma Proteomics Profiling
Location Amsterdam Education University Focus Research Working week (Fulltime) 36 hours Closing date 13 juli 2018 Vacancy number RESL06-18EXT 2
Job description :
Mass spectrometry (MS)-based proteomics is a technology that holds great promise in discovering biomarkers in body fluids.
Recent improvements in MS-based proteomics (Cox and Mann, 2011; Muñoz and Heck, 2014) and the development of robust and highly streamlined shotgun plasma proteomics workflows (Geyer et al, Cell Systems 2016, Mol Syst Biol 2017) now enable plasma proteome profiling’ at a unprecedented level.
In this project we aim to use plasma proteome profiling to identify plasma biomarkers that i) predict the quality and storage potential of individual blood products and ii) associate with haemoglobin (Hb) and ferritin levels and predict the health status of donors.
In addition, we aim to explore this method for future diagnostics, including diagnosis of amongst others inherited and acquired bleeding disorders and infectious diseases.
Where you will work :
Sanquin Blood Supply Foundation is an internationally acclaimed research institute which performs basic, applied and clinically oriented research in the field of blood and blood transfusion.
Research conducted at Sanquin aims to further our understanding of blood and blood vessels, the interaction of blood with cells, and genetic or acquired diseases affecting blood components.
Our team is embedded in the Department of Plasma Proteins, where a vibrant, international group of 35-40 colleagues (group leaders, postdocs, PhD students and technicians) are studying various aspects of hemostatic networks.
We have academic affiliations with high-ranking universities in the Netherlands, such as Utrecht University and the University of Amsterdam.
To unravel critical interactions between hemostatic proteins and cells of the vasculature and the immune system we use a multidisciplinary approach that involves protein engineering, molecular cell biology, immunology and functional proteomics.
The department’s research program benefits from the excellent research facilities at Sanquin, which include the newest technology for cell biology and biomolecular mass spectrometry.
