The Department of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry at TU / e is renowned for its top research and education in areas such as Sustainable Process Technology, Materials Chemistry and Functional Materials.
Our researchers focus on societal challenges concerning energy, circular economy and next-generation adaptive materials that will radically change our life.
Technology is developed to manufacture sustainable chemicals and fuels, to develop new materials to convert and store energy, to synthesize recyclable polymers, and to design smart materials that enhance contact between humans and robots.
As part of a nation-wide initiative to stimulate the chemical and engineering sciences, the department invites applications for four (4) new faculty positions in the following areas :
Circular polymer materials. The field of polymeric materials requires a fundamental transition from synthesis out of fossil-
based feedstock and one-time use, to continuous re-use of polymeric products. Besides reducing carbon footprint, this transition also poses highly challenging academic research questions related to energy-
efficient polymerization and depolymerization processes in relation to recyclability. The focus of this (assistant / associate professor) position will be on (chemical) recycling of high-
performance and engineering polymers. The position will be embedded in a team of highly qualified researchers working on supramolecular organic and polymer chemistry, theoretical modeling and the development of new polymer materials and devices made thereof.
Inorganic Material Chemistry. This new professor position is meant to strengthen the department’s profile in the field of inorganic materials chemistry with a focus on advanced experimental methods to the design, synthesis, characterization and application of novel inorganic materials.
Without limiting the scope, examples of relevant research topics include energy materials (especially storage and conversion), nanomaterials (composition, morphology, defects), hybrid materials, supramolecular inorganic chemistry, and the development / use of advanced methods for characterization of such materials (e.
g, advanced microscopy / spectroscopy).
Affinity Separations. Energy efficient, highly selective separation technology is one of the key unit operations in the chemical industry and an inherent aspect of a circular, sustainable economy.
Especially its integration in chemical conversion processes and chemical reaction engineering to increase yields and purity is essential.
The tenured staff position Affinity Separations is dedicated to the design and development of novel affinity solvents and sorbents for the selective recovery and recycling of valuable components and to be integrated in chemical processes and multiphase chemical reactors to significantly improve chemical conversion, selectivity and recyclability.
This position is complementary to existing positions in the field of organic and inorganic membranes and chemical process engineering.
Process Systems Engineering. The increasing availability of intermittent electrical power, the distributed availability of biomass and waste streams and the pressing concerns to decrease emissions require a new paradigm in the design of chemical plants.
It requests integrated and distributed (small scale) processes with a high degree of flexibility in terms of type of resources and capacity / productivity to accommodate feedstock variation.
This imposes important process synthesis and design questions. The focus of this tenured staff position will be on process system design for such new integrated processes with increased energy efficiency and reduced emissions in the framework of zero waste chemical industry.
It is associated to existing chairs in the field of sustainable process engineering and process intensification.
