Job purpose

This is a fundamental role in the Liberty Global delivery chain ensuring we release quality products and services across our various markets in an increasingly complex consumer ecosystem where the link between customer experience and our testing quality gate has never been stronger.

The primary purpose of the Principal Engineer position is to lead a team of direct and indirect engineers to manage the testing of new and existing Connectivity products within Liberty Global and all its operating companies including disposed operating companies where we have ongoing delivery obligations.

This role is both a functional role in the execution and management of testing campaigns, along with the management of a team of test leads

This role supports all Connectivity businesses within Liberty Global and all its operating companies to deliver solutions for the technology platforms while working in a high pressure and business critical environment.

This includes direct day-to-day remote and on-site contact with numerous stakeholders within the company as well as international 3rd party suppliers and interaction and engagement with Operating Companies.

Responsibilities will include :

  • Create and manage the design of Test Plans, i.e. Test Scopes and Test Strategies for certain products and components
  • Help to assess, design and manage the provision of Test Resources and Test Scopes for appropriate Connectivity Test Campaigns
  • Manage the execution of Test Campaigns, in summary and detail for multiple Internal and 3rd Party workstreams and provide progress reports
  • Motivating and engaging a team of test leads that drives a sense a urgency and focus on customer experience and quality.
  • Work closely in a matrix environment with upstream engineering teams and vendors and downstream deployment teams in Defect Triage from investigation to resolution and retest
  • Create and help to manage the design of various Test Exit Reports, with handover engagements
  • Ensure key performance indicators are met and define improvement plans with peers in Engineering and deployment and across the Testing team.
  • Support and prepare Launch Go / NoGo Decisions with key Stakeholders
  • Support the selection of Test Automation Tools and methodologies
  • Supporting Connectivity Test Management team with the management of Change Requests and introduction / improvements / enhancements to existing test and team capabilities to allow for / enable research, test development, New Product / Feature integrations and testing (in all phases) of new products and services changes
  • Actively participate in the review, design, creation and on-going maintenance of Connectivity Test Cases (including test case life cycle) and additions to those test libraries
  • Align Test Scopes to technologies, capabilities and customer needs and requirements on an going basis, including appropriate test environments
  • Work with key Stakeholders to help refine Technical Requirements needed for successful ongoing testing and research results
  • Manage the Product(s) Testing Roadmaps and appropriate reports generation
  • Review Technical Field Trial Reports and apply corrective action to ensure lessons are learnt for future successful testing
  • Key Accountabilities

  • Day to day management of test workstreams and resources with some task prioritisation
  • Point of contact for Key Stakeholders and accurate communications to Product & Delivery Programme teams.
  • Creation and management of Test Assessment & Sizing, Test Plans, Test Campaign Execution, Test Exit Reports, resourcing, scheduling, testing escalations and quality within assigned areas
  • Drive automation of testing and certification processes and regression test plans within Connectivity Service Testing while working closely with other workstreams that influence the delivery of testing
  • Support the activities and efficiency of on-shore and off-shore testing with our business partners to increase efficiency and reduce costs for testing.
  • Knowledge & Experience

    Preferred qualifications / experience :

  • Ideally a Degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant engineering or associated discipline.
  • Employment (5+ years) in a management position within engineering / operational / integration or test management with either a Service Provider, Telecoms Supplier / Vendor or in a Technology Consultancy.
  • Knowledge of HFC Networks, Euro DOCSIS, VoIP, Customer Premise Equipment, IP Networks, Wireless Technology and Home Networking.
  • Knowledge of embedded SW particularly on CPE, Cable Modems & STB)
  • Knowledge of test automation practices and scripting approaches
  • Understanding of certification testing methodology and approach. ISTQB would be a positive.
  • A strong technical knowledge of operational requirements within a service provider environment.
  • Subject matter expert / authority in particular area of technology and acts as the technical point of expertise in their field.
  • Fluent English speaker, ideally with other European languages.

  • Commercially aware with financial management experience in budgeting, planning and reporting
  • Must be effective in MS Excel and MS Powerpoint as well as Test Tools such as Jira
  • Previous participation and experience in Testing Automation
  • Self-motivated with the ability to continually self-monitor & develop in a global matrix working environment
  • Self-motivated and proactive in the working environment; proven successful ability to work with speed and accuracy to deadlines is essential
  • Must be prepared to travel, with overnight stays, to multiple European and UK offices.
