Supports the National Science Foundation managed United States Antarctic Program as part of the Antarctic Support Contract (ASC).
The Insulator will perform maintenance or construction tasking, or any combination thereof, under the supervision of the Insulator Foreman.
Tasking is based on ASC schedule requirements.
GENERAL DUTIES (not all inclusive) :
Perform hands-on insulation tasks on maintenance and construction projects utilizing a variety of materials and toolsInstall insulation on piping, walls, and other surfacesMaintain and repair existing insulationRemove and reinstall insulation as needed to facilitate repairs to piping and heat traceInstall temporary insulation on piping as needed until permanent insulation can be installedPerform minor sheet metal work as requiredTimely response to emergency service calls during and outside of normal working hoursAccurate and thorough documentation of hours worked, tasking performed, materials used, and processes involvedAdvise immediate Supervisor of job progress and material / labor requirementsAccomplish tasking utilizing design drawings, specifications, and wiring diagramsFollow established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and create or revise SOPs as neededPerform tasking outdoors in environmentally challenging conditions including wind and extreme cold weatherUse solid decision making ability and sound judgment to safely and effectively solve problemsProactively identify any unsafe conditions or hazards and communicate them effectivelyWork directly with other departments to plan and complete taskingLearn and use computer based labor, material, and maintenance tracking applicationsMay deploy to remote research support facilities for day trips or extended periods (McMurdo only)Occasionally utilize the assistance of other station personnel to complete tasking, or assist other trades or departments with their taskingComply with all ASC Environmental, Safety and Health (ESH), Waste Management and Quality Assurance requirementsParticipate in Work Center Safety Program and ASC safety objectivesParticipate in community programs such as "house-mouse" (chores), "daisy-picking" (station clean-up), "GASH" (galley clean-up at Palmer), and recycling effortsPerform other duties as required
Minimum four years’ experience in all phases of industrial insulation to include installation, repair and removalExperience with pipe insulation, including fabrication of metal sheathingExperience in construction and maintenance of commercial and / or industrial facilitiesAbility to read and interpret design drawings, specifications, and diagramsPossess prior computer experience and be able and willing to learn and effectively utilize computer based labor, inventory, and maintenance tracking applicationsPossess the competencies, willingness and ability to perform the duties of positionWillingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periodsMust be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies and equipment up to the safety regulation maximumMust be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoorsSuccessful completion of Medical and Dental examinations required by the NSF for deployment to AntarcticaHigh School diploma or equivalentValid Driver’s License issued in the United StatesUS citizenship or US Permanent Resident Status
Experience with Maximo or other Computerized Maintenance Management System
