Viterra is looking for a quantitative analyst to join the research department. Your primary task will be working with different stakeholders within our company to create a generalized framework for the development and dissemination of real-time crop yield prediction models for different crop types and locations.

A secondary task will be to support business intelligence by developing and maintaining new complex tools like demand / pricing models.

This role is part of the company’s drive to develop more data-driven decision making with the final aim to increase trade earnings.

Job description

  • Design the workflow for crop yield prediction including data preprocessing, training / test split, feature design / selection, algorithm development, evaluation, results interpretation and reporting.
  • The workflow should take into account :
  • o Explainable features based on sound agronomic principles.

    o Modularity so that the workflow can be continuously improved and extended.

    o Reusability to ensure that the workflow can handle different crops and countries with minimal configuration changes.

  • Scale the forecasting system for different crops and locations.
  • Investigate supervised machine learning to build on other classical statistical techniques.
  • Liaise with various internal stakeholders to improve our data analysis infrastructure and ensure the forecasting system can be implemented operationally with the necessary maintenance, review, and improvement cycles.
  • Write regular and timely in-season reports to discuss the implications of your prediction results with traders.
  • Besides crop modelling, you will develop and maintain other complex tools that lead to strategic insights and trading strategies.
  • Supervise and mentor peers / junior analysts on their quantitative work and reports.
  • Perform ad-hoc complex analyses for acute business needs.
  • Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years of work experience with quantitative analysis, ideally including time series;
  • Post-graduate degree in statistics, mathematics, computer science, econometrics or similar field;
  • Hands-on experience with developing, testing and implementing models;
  • Above average coding skills in programming environments like Python or R;
  • Knowledge of SQL and relational databases an advantage;
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills;
  • Excellent communication skills and command of English language;
  • Pro-active team-player who can also work independently on own tasks and under pressure;
