Role Description and purpose

SMI / Portfolio Monitoring and Modelling (PM&M) is responsible for the monitoring of all portfolios managed by Structured Management Institutional (SMI) within Multi Asset, Quant and Solutions (MAQS).

The SMI team manages a variety of clients and is specialized in liability-driven asset management and risk-overlay strategies.

PM&Ms responsibility is two folds : develop proprietary models to monitor and manage risk of SMI portfolios and manage all data flows to allow a correct and timely use of the models.

The prerequisite to manage portfolios and to report about the risk is to have the underlying data correct. Thats why you as a Data Manager are responsible for :

  • timely running of all data processes
  • data quality checks on the origin of the data, and follow up on data quality issues
  • all client configurations required to run the proprietary models
  • safeguard a universal understanding of the data so that there is a common understanding by all data-users.
  • As Data manager you have to operate like a spider in the web between different involved parties (like Accounting Agents, Operations, Portfolio managers, Reporting, IT,) hence it is crucial to have a personal communication style that maximizes your credibility and authority as Data Manager.

    Interacting with the customized modellers within the team is crucial to understand the models used and to provide proper feedback to Portfolio Managers.

    Therefore you should have, or willing to develop, portfolio and / or risk management skills. To further fine-tune the operational environment and / or the proprietary models (some) programming skills are required (or need to be developed).

    KEY responsibilities

  • The primary objective of a Data Manager is focused on two aspects : safeguard the data quality and data integrity. Whereby aspects of data quality include : accuracy, completeness, consistency and understanding.
  • And data integrity implies : accessible, safely stored, reliable and wisely communicated

  • Therefore, your responsibility lies in daily updates of databases (client, portfolio and market data), performing daily checks on data, solve and monitor data anomalies.
  • This all is supported by dedicated tools developed by IT. Around this we have developed ourselves some small tools which needs your attention (and maintenance).

  • A secondary responsibility includes the preparation of regular risk reports which facilitates the Portfolio Managers to monitor all the portfolio constraints and any near breaches.
  • Additional (ad-hoc) tasks of the Data Manager include : active participation in projects related to data management tools, evaluate operational risks (procedures, back up plans and systems) and make suggestions on how to improve procedures.
  • Key Internal / External Relationships

  • Internal : Internal : Portfolio Management, IT, Reporting, Operations (Benchmark team, Security Creations, Price Analytics)
  • External : Market Data Providers (Accounting Agents, Custodians, Depositaries, subcontractors (BP2S / IRP))
  • Role requirements

  • Academic & Professional Qualification : Preferable Masters degree in Economics / Econometrics / Mathematics
  • Professional / technical experience Good knowledge of the financial theory, financial markets and financial products. 2-4 years of experience in front-to-back office processes, experience in Operational Data Processes.
  • Affinity with portfolio management and / or risk management processes. Preferred : Experience in (risk) modelling and / or programming, use of databases, knowledge of data modelling.

    Comfortable with Excel, (preferred) VBA and Phyton. Familiair with Bloomberg, BarraOne, Aladdin, Risk Metrics or another integrated risk system is preferred.

  • Personal skills : good analytical skills, accurate and attention to detail, strong professional working attitude, disciplined, a high level of ambition and motivation, teamplayer, and good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Languages : English fluent (written and spoken), Dutch is preferred, French is beneficial.
