Topic description

REDI is a unique PhD Training Program offering excellent PhD conditions including enviable international experience, top-class research discipline and transversal skills training as well as networking with academic and industry leaders across 60+supporting partners and 12 countries.

REDI is looking for one Researcher (with less than 4 years of research experience and not in the possession of a Doctoral Degree yet), who will be closely working with TUe (Netherlands) and and RMIT University (Australia) on one of three research projects :

Project 1 - Reinventing Remote Control :

Goal is to investigate how control over remote distances can be re-invented. Sustainable

technology solutions for controls are designed and developed in a data-driven approach

including AI / machine learning) and evaluated in a series of case studies with industrial partners.

Adding a systemic change perspective these solutions make users care more about

sustainability and other key societal development factors.

Research Fields : Industrial design, Sustainability, Data science and Digital design.

Project 2 - Design for control to enhance society :

Goal is to follow a data-driven design approach to find new interaction forms for remote

control, that can lead to more sustainable behavior in society overall. Goal of the project is to

enrich design knowledge in the field and come up with a design framework for sustainable

design solutions in the area of control. The design framework will be validated with a series of

case studies together with the industrial partners especially Ruwido.

Research Fields : Industrial design, Sustainability and Digital design.

Project 3 - Evaluation Methods for (remote) Control Solutions :

Goal of this PhD is to investigate how remote control (control from a distance) can be redesigned

and how to evaluate different control approaches in changing contexts (for example

Automotive user interaction vs Control in the home environment). The candidate will develop

methods or a combination of (data-driven) methods to investigate how such novel concepts of

control can be evaluated with respect to systemic change factors like sustainability.

The Researcher will be supervised by Full Prof. Regina Bernhaupt (TUe) and Prof. Laurene

Vaughan (RMIT) .

The Researcher will be based at TUe (Netherlands) for at least 36-months and will be awarded a

dual PhD by TUe and RMIT.

The remuneration, in line with the European Commission rules for Marie Skłodowska-Curie

grant holders, will consist of a gross annual salary of est. 34.076 EUR (gross amount before

employee’s taxes and contributions). Of this amount, the estimated net salary to be perceived

by the Researcher is est. 1.964 EUR net per month. However, the definite amount to be received

by the Researcher is subject to national tax legislation.

Candidate's profile

To apply for REDI, you must comply with the MSCA-COFUND eligibility criteria by the application deadline :

  • Be in the first four years Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) research experience of your research career and not yet have been awarded a doctoral degree.
  • FTE Research Experience is measured from the date when a researcher obtained the degree entitling him / her to embark on a doctorate,

  • Not have resided or carried out your main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of your research host for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before this call’s deadline.
  • Time spent as part of a procedure for obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention (1951 Refugee Convention and 1967 Protocol), compulsory national service and / or short stays such as holidays is not taken into account.

    AND the following criteria :

  • Hold a bachelor's degree requiring at least 4 years of full-time study in a relevant discipline
  • awarded with honours and including a research component; OR

  • Hold a master's degree that includes a research component or a master degree without a research component with at least a high distinction average; OR
  • Have evidence of appropriate academic qualifications and / or professional experience demonstrating that the applicant has developed knowledge of the field of study or cognate field and the potential for research sufficient to undertake the chosen project.
  • Have English level C1 language proficiency.
