Introduction

Are you a Bachelor or Master graduation student in Material Science or Mechanical Engineering? do you have good communication skills and laboratory experience?

Then this assignment could be interesting for you.

Job Mission

ASML uses all kind of different materials in the various modules and machines. One of the tasks within the Construction Materials, Corrosion and Bonding group is to identify new materials / treatments and evaluate their applications in ASML products.

Since ASML is a special and critical industry in its use of parts, several requirements must be taken in account when selecting a material / treatment.

Job Description

Austenitic stainless steels are widely used because of their corrosion resistance, biocompatibility and ability to withstand high temperatures.

However, due to the low hardness they suffer from low wear resistance and a tendency for galling. The wear and galling resistance can be improved by using surface hardening treatments.

This internship is focused on applying different surface hardening techniques on an austenitic stainless steel and comparing the surface properties. You will :

  • provide a general understanding on the different surface hardening techniques;
  • identify the required surface properties by considering the application conditions;
  • develop a test protocol to measure different surface properties;
  • do the analyses and compare the surface properties developed by different hardening processes with and without electropolishing treatment;
  • visit suppliers to assess their possibilities and capacities;
  • make a statement whether the new surface treatment is equal or better than the current surface treatment from technical point of view based on the outcome of the experimental tests and suppliers conditions;
  • provide a report and a presentation based on the results.
  • Education

    You are a Bachelor or Master graduation student in Material science or Mechanical engineering. Good communication skills are required and experience in a laboratory environment is a pre.

    We build some of the most amazing machines that you will ever see, and the software to run them. Never satisfied, we measure our performance in units that begin with pico or nano.

    We believe we can always do better. We believe the winning idea can come from anyone. We love what we do not because it’s easy, but because it’s hard.

    Students : Getting ready for real-world R&D

    Pushing technology further is teamwork, and our R&D team is more than 5,500 people strong, with major sites on three continents.

    Dozens of diverse, interdisciplinary teams work in parallel to meet a challenging development schedule.

    In such an environment, your colleagues may be sitting next door, or they could be thousands of kilometers away in a different country, or even working for a different company.

    An internship at ASML is your opportunity to get to know this world of industrial-strength R&D and get a feel for that excites you most.

    Will you design a part of the machine, or make sure it gets built to the tightest possible specifications? Will you write software that drives the system to its best performance, or work side-by-side with the engineers of our customers in a fab, optimizing a system to the requirements of the customer?

    How will you be part of progress?
