What will you be doing?

TNO’s Structural Dynamics (SD) department provides a unique combination of theoretical and experimental structural research for both the civil and the defence spheres.

This is used for such sectors as maritime and offshore. SD’s researchers subject the structural aspects of ships and offshore installations to extensive testing and assess and improve them, including through use of numerical analyses and experimental validation in the SD lab for mechanical structures.

In that respect, our focus is specifically on the behaviour of materials and structures under extreme conditions (low temperature, high pressure).

Your role will see you link the latest technological developments to the challenges faced by the (international) maritime and offshore industry.

Consider in this regard safe structures for storage and transport of liquid hydrogen, operating in Arctic regions and connection technologies for offshore wind structures.

With your network and standing in the (inter)national arena, you will be engaged in developing new projects and programs that bolster competitiveness, improve sustainability and also take into account the applicable safety requirements.

These projects go above and beyond the current standard, so an understanding of the challenges and the regulatory framework is essential on top of having an overview of possible solutions.

The projects are geared towards research and development of new, innovative knowledge in conjunction with (international) strategic partners, as well as towards resolving current issues.

Our customer base primarily consists of major players in the field, including owners, operators, contractors and regulatory bodies such as classification societies and the government.

You will be capable of making the most of the subsidy circuit to the benefit of the industry and society. In this regard, you will be connecting multiple disciplines within and outside of TNO.

You will have vision, flag up new challenges and indicate the direction in which the team will need to develop if TNO SD is to retain its leading role.

You will be capable of embedding this knowledge development in a technology roadmap that dovetails with the innovation roadmap for Maritime & Offshore.

By means of publications and presentations at international conferences, you will put TNO more firmly on the map.

What do we require of you?

  • You will have successfully completed an academic course of higher education in maritime engineering, civil engineering, mechanical engineering or aerospace specializing in mechanics, PhD preferred.
  • You will have a solid theoretical basis, though also practical insight into the dynamic behaviour of structures.
  • You will have a demonstrable academic track record, e.g. through academic positions (inc. part-time) and / or a relevant publication list.
  • In addition to substantive knowledge and a structured approach to work, we set great store by communication skills, customer focus and being results-
  • oriented, enabling employees to work in a team towards an end result that is practicable and useful for our customers. You will be expected to provide strong leadership and guidance.

You will be capable of translating the challenges from the outside world into research questions that tie in with the Structural Dynamics sphere.

  • You will be capable of motivating and persuading people and of unifying parties using your extensive network of relevant contacts in the maritime and offshore spheres.
  • In that respect, you will have experience in the European subsidy landscape and be properly au fait with the international developments in the sphere.

  • You will have a good command of Dutch and English (spoken and written).
  • What can you expect of your work situation?

The Structural Dynamics department’s remit encompasses the design, analysis and testing of the widest array of mechanical structures on land and water.

In that regard, the focus is on the dynamic behaviour of structures. The fact that we have a well-equipped lab at our disposal means that practical and theoretical knowledge go hand in hand and enables us to solve the most complex problems.

We are a varied team of c. 45 professionals working on solutions for a variety of markets : maritime, offshore, infrastructure, built environment and defence.

Moreover, we use first-class knowledge of mechanics and dynamics for both theoretical and experimental research on materials, structures and systems.

The behaviour of materials and structures in terms of failure and giving way plays an essential role in our projects.

    What can TNO offer you?

Work enjoyment means something different for each employee. This is why we offer a-la-carte terms and conditions of employment that you can switch around on a monthly basis.

Flexible working hours (like 4 days x 9 hours) and different leave schemes mean that you can create a package attuned to your specific wishes.

TNO attaches great value to both your personal and your professional development. Many opportunities exist for you to develop : conferences, courses, workshops, coaching, intervision, mentoring and job rotation.

At TNO you can orchestrate your own career.

    Application process

The process comprises at least two (selection) rounds. After a positive selection, we will finish off the process by discussing terms and conditions of employment.

We try to complete the interviews and assessment within 4 weeks.
